METALAST R&D Produce Three More TECHSpecs

December 10, 1999

METALAST, the leading innovator in technology, research, and process support to the aluminum anodizing industry, announces the recent completion of three (3) new additions to the METALAST TECHSpec program.

The first TECHSpec, "Current Efficiency", explains how the METALAST process considerably reduces burning rejects, as compared to traditional anodizing processes. The higher the current efficiency, the less the burning chance of the anodizing process. The current efficiency of the METALAST process was determined on the most commonly used materials and provided in this spec. The current efficiency of the METALAST process is close to 100%, in most cases, even for alloys that are considered difficult to anodize, such as 2024-T6.

Next, "Coating Weight & Conversion Efficiency" shows how both the coating weights and conversion efficiency produced by the METALAST Technology are significantly higher than the industry standard, Mil-Spec 8625F. The higher the conversion efficiency, the better the performance of the anodizing process. The conversion efficiency of traditional anodizing processes is only about 61% under the most favorable conditions, according to well-recognized literature. The METALAST process has conversion efficiencies higher than 78%, except in the case of alloy 2024-T3 under Type-II conditions.

Lastly, "Sealing Quality" explains how the METALAST Type II coatings sealed in nickel acetate far exceeds the ISO 7599 satisfactory value for sealing quality. The better the sealing quality, the higher the corrosion resistance. Both anodizing process and sealing process influence the sealing quality. The results indicate that the anodic coatings produced at higher current density have better sealing quality than those produced at lower current density, in the case of the boiling DI water sealing process.

METALAST TECHSpecs are technical data sheets backed by scientific analysis and research describing the performance capabilities of anodized surfaces using the METALAST Technology.

METALAST offers the most complete and advanced technology to the anodizing industry. In addition to the world’s only dedicated anodizing research and development center, the company provides advanced chemistry, computer process controls, education and training, and full technical and marketing support. The METALAST technology facilitates production of superior oxides and operating efficiencies with improved consistency, repeatability, and process verification. METALAST is offered under a license to anodizers. Manufacturers can access any element of the technology, e.g. R&D, technical support, education and training under agreement with the METALAST Consulting Agreement (MCA).
