Overview
METALAST TCP-HF EPA (Extended Protection Additive) is a “non-chromium” chromate conversion coating product to be used in conjunction with METALAST TCP-HF, as an anti-corrosion and paint adhesion to metal agent. This chromate conversion coating chemical additive helps in achieving military conversion coating specifications, aerospace, automotive and other industry’s corrosion standards such as MIL-DTL-81706B, MIL-DTL-5541 and ASTM D3359 paint adhesion. METALAST TCP-HF EPA excels in chromate conversion coating applications where process control is limited and/or facility constraints prohibit the use of optimal pretreatment practice especially in situations where paint adhesion to metal or meeting conversion coating specifications is critical.
Background
Historically, one of the more difficult aspects of using a trivalent chromate conversion coating, as a “drop-in” replacement for hexavalent chromate conversion coatings, is the requirement of rigid pre-treatment chemistry operating parameters, which will produce maximum anti-corrosive and paint adhesive benefits, ultimately leading to the passing of many different industry specifications, including military conversion coating specifications, MIL-DTL-81706B, MIL-DTL-5541 and ASTM D3359. Metal finishing processors and manufacturers spend months if not years trying to optimize their chromate conversion coating processing parameters and product specifications that will allow for consistent results that pass salt spray requirements, paint adhesion to metal, military conversion coating specifications and other corrosion specifications. The nature of trivalent chromate conversion coating technology poses the burden of tailoring the facility’s resources and equipment constraints to the product, which requires a slightly more sophisticated level of understanding than most processing facilities can afford to undertake. For this reason, METALAST began down the path to produce a chromate conversion coating additive that would work in conjunction with METALAST TCP-HF while providing a more generic and robust solution. METALAST TCP-HF EPA, now available to the market, provides superior anti-corrosive and paint adhesive properties, while meeting key military conversion coating and industry specifications such as MIL-DTL-81706B, MIL-DTL-5541 and ASTM D3359 paint adhesion.
General Performance
METALAST TCP-HF EPA can be added to an existing METALAST TCP-HF bath without affecting the color, paint adhesion to metal, or electrical resistance properties that METALAST TCP-HF alone provides. In addition, bath longevity and the chemical analysis of METALAST TCP-HF is not affected when METALAST TCP-HF EPA is added. When used in conjunction with METALAST TCP-HF, METALAST TCP-HF EPA will easily meet the requirements of the following specifications:
- MIL-DTL-5541
- MIL-DTL-81706B
- ASTM D3359 paint adhesion
Applications
METALAST TCP-HF EPA chromate conversion coating additive is specifically designed for aluminum wrought alloys but can also work on the following substrates for anti-corrosion enhancement:
