METALAST AA-200 is another RoHS compliant METALAST specialty chemical product. AA-200 is a proprietary aluminum anodizing, chemical additive used in conjunction with a conventional hardcoat anodizing or sulfuric anodizing metal finishing processing tank. AA-200 is a next generation “green” aluminum anodizing chemical additive aimed at providing a more efficient and superior anodized metal product to manufacturers and consumers around the world.
Background
Historically, anodizing chemical additives have been available to the metal finishing industry, providing quality anodized metal products and good industry test results. Although these “tried and true” specialty chemicals have passed the test of time, these aluminum anodizing additives still don’t address or solve many of the hardcoat anodizing or sulfuric anodizing processing issues.
Performance and Product Advantages
The AA-200 chemical additive is a combination of organic monomers specially formulated to prevent the anodized metal from burning during the primary stage of the aluminum anodizing process. As a result of decreasing the tendency for burning, a harder more uniform and better quality oxide is formed on the anodized metal part. Burning becomes magnified during a hardcoat anodizing process or when trying to finish difficult to aluminum anodize alloys such as 2024.
Although the AA-200 outperforms all other conventional chemical additives by decreasing burning tendencies, it is still very important that the metal finishing job shop provides a optimal aluminum anodizing environment. Some other items that need to be addressed and that may contribute to localized heating and burning include:
- Non uniform or insufficient agitation
- Rises in electrolyte temperature due to poor chilling capacity
- Insufficient contact area or poor contact
- Thin parts or parts with sharp edges
In addition to reducing the burning tendencies of an aluminum anodizing or hardcoat anodizing process, the AA-200 chemical additive provides many other benefits to the metal finisher.
Observed major benefits of METALAST AA-200:
- Meets or exceeds all major aluminum anodizing specifications, including MIL-A-8625F
- Provides superior corrosion protection, hardness, and abrasion resistance
- Provides improved consistency and uniformity of oxide
- Provides improved resistance to burning, especially difficult to anodize alloys
- Allows for operation at higher current densities, especially in hardcoat anodizing applications
- Reduces cracking and crazing
- Improves efficiency - reduces decants
- Provides superior quality, smoothness, and lubricity
- Reduces overall operating costs
- Benefits both Type III (hardcoat anodizing) and Type II (sulfuric anodizing)
Applications and Installation
The METALAST AA-200 is used in the primary aluminum anodizing processing tank including hardcoat anodizing and sulfuric anodizing environments. Although it is recommend hardcoat anodizing is performed at 32˚f (+/- 2˚) and sulfuric anodizing performed at 70˚f (+/- 2˚), AA-200 can be used in a wide aluminum anodizing temperature range.
Installation of the chemical additive requires much lower concentration, 0.4% to 0.8% or 4 gallons to 8 gallons per 1,000 gallon bath. Other commercially available chemical additives can require substantially higher concentrations in the range of 2% to 4% or 20 gallons to 40 gallons per 1,000 gallon bath. Once in operation, all chemical additives will require periodic replacement from chemical breakdown, incorporation into the oxide, evaporation and drag-out. METALAST AA-200 maintenance due to consumption from all sources is very low and cost effective. Installation and use of the AA-200 specialty chemical is supported by the technical and research staff of the METALAST Tech Center, the worlds only dedicated metal finishing R&D facility. Use requires periodic sampling and analysis by METALAST Staff at no charge (customer pays for sample containers and shipping).
Testing
Documented METALAST Technical Summaries (TECHSpecs) fully support all the benefits of the METALAST AA-200 specialty chemical additive. Although the data was compiled while using the METALAST JobPro in-conjunction with METALAST AA-200, the AA-200 chemical additive is a “stand-alone” product that has the versatility to be implemented in a variety of operating environments. The complete TECHSpecs may be requested or downloaded from the METALAST Documents Library.
Tests and basis for benefits of METALAST AA-200:
- Corrosion resistance:
Over 4,000 hours of corrosion protection as tested by ASTM B 117, greatly exceeding MIL-A-8625F requirement of 336 hours.
- Accuracy of Desired Oxide Thickness:
Demonstrated conformance to desired oxide thickness within a range of 2-5%.
- Process Capability Index (Cpk):
Demonstrated repeatability with a Cpk of 2.54, considerably outperforming the ISO/QS 9000 requirement for a Cpk of 1.33 and indicating virtually reject-free performance capabilities.
- Coating Formation Rate:
A scientifically supported high and consistent rate of aluminum anodizing coating formation, improved by the ability to run at higher current density without burning.
- Abrasion Resistance:
Taber abrasion of 0.89 mg/1,000 cycles on tested 6061-T6 samples, consistently surpassing the abrasion allowance of 1.5 mg/1,000 cycles by MIL-A-8625F.
- Micro hardness:
Tested samples surpass ISO 10074 Acceptance Value by 25-30% or more.
- Aluminum Anodizing Build-up Rate:
Field results, supported by lab analysis, indicate better control, analysis, and slower rate of aluminum anodizing build-up. Customers previously decanting every 3-4 weeks report reducing that to 6-12 months between decants.
- Coating Weight and Conversion Efficiency:
General conversion efficiency of 78-97% among a variety of alloys, in comparison to reported level of 61% in conventional hardcoat anodizing and sulfuric anodizing.
- Sealing Quality:
Seal tests in accordance with ASTM B 680-80 meet or exceed ISO 7599 specification in all cases.
- Current Efficiency:
Current efficiency using METALAST Process is close to 100% in most cases, supporting resistance to burning, higher quality performance, and superior anodized metal quality.
Approvals
