Overview
METALAST BDP is the first fire retardant and fume suppressing class of environmental friendly inorganic fire prevention chemistries. It provides exceptional fire resistance with no testable smoke generation and limited flame spread of 0. These fire retardant coatings are water based and contain no VOC’s, deca-BDE, PBDE’s, brominated based chemicals or any other hazardous materials. METALAST BDP is an ideal solution for many industries and applications including fire resistant clothing, fabrics, building materials and many other applications.
METALAST BDP is a “green” technology that provides low cost fire prevention at temperatures exceeding 1,800° F, which demonstrates unique and superior fire retardant capabilities while containing no VOC’s, unlike any other product tested by Underwriters Laboratories.
Performance and Product Advantages
METALAST BDP provides a “Class A” fire retardant rating (ASTM E-84 tunnel test) on wood, plywood, OSB or fiberboard. Fire barrier ratings of 30 minutes to 2 hours may be achieved and will depend on the amount of applied coating and the type of substrates.

Applications
In developing the METALAST BDP fire retardant product line, product considerations were made based on the ease of manufacturing, toxicity, environmental friendliness (no VOC’s), cost effectiveness and non-halogen (non bromine). Developed and tested, commercially available fire prevention coating products include:
- structural steel
- particle additives (1-10 microns)
- plastic products
- saturants for fabrics, including fire resistant clothing
- wood and wood based materials
Particles for plastics activate at room temperatures above 250° C, making METALAST BDP fire prevention products ideal for high temperature injection molding. METALAST will provide assistance with applications that need to meet ASTM E-119 ratings.

Testing
Comprehensive, independent and successful test results have demonstrated new advances in fire prevention, and specifically in the area of superior fume suppressing technology, to the extent that UL (Underwriters Laboratories) has put METALAST BDP fire retardant (no VOC’s) products in a special category as they have shown their ability to reduce toxic emissions significantly lower than that of any other product in the market. METALAST BDP coatings have also been submitted to the Hardwood Plywood & Veneer Association for independent testing of Flame Spread and Smoke Development. In all tests, METALAST BDP has secured a Class A fire rating. Also, METALAST BDP has been tested for mold inhibition according to ASTM D-3273-82. The test results show the METALAST BDP fire retardant coatings have the highest possible rating of 10, which indicates the absence of mold growth.
Additionally, a significant number of companies have performed third-party fire prevention testing, however provisions contained in various Confidentiality Agreements and/or Secrecy Agreements prevent METALAST from disclosing specific customer applications. Some of the companies to perform independent testing include:
- 3M Corporate: Currently in testing at 10 divisions.
- Boeing Aircraft: Passed initialing testing on aviation component parts associated with the new 787 “Dreamliner” project. The product is now in further fire prevention testing with suppliers of injection moldings.
- RTP, Inc.: A major supplier to Boeing, RTP has tested by compounding on a TPO resin and has approved the product for use.
- Ford Motors: Extensive testing with the Advanced Scientific Division, on a number different products, saturants, coatings and particles.
- BASF: Particles being tested for use in polyurethane and polyisocyanurate polyols, elastomeric division and Nyloboard.
- National Gypsum: Integration in the manufacturing process are being analyzed and tested to determine if the particles flame retard by expanding and giving off of hydration at temperatures between 100° C and 140° C.
METALAST BDP Product Line
- METALAST SAT - 100: These char forming fire retardant, no VOC chemicals are formulated as a part of a water solution. METALAST SAT 100 contains a wetting agent that allows the product to penetrate natural fiber substrates (without discoloration) such as cotton fabric (fire resistant clothing), hemp, flax, paper or thin particle board.
- METALAST SAT - 200: METALAST SAT 200 is a water solution of a fire retardant chemical synthetic fabrics such as polyesters and is also formulated as a part of a water solution.
- METALAST ILC 100: METALAST ILC 100 competes with most intumescent coatings in the market place. A water based latex intumescent coating for application to wood and plastic substrates. The product applied to wood, wood based materials such as OSB and plywood, will obtain a “Class A” fire prevention rating.
- METALAST ILC 200: METALAST ILC 200 is a water based latex intumescent fire retardant coating designed to generate a greater intumescent insulative effect specifically for spray application for structural steel where an architectural coating is required.
- METALAST STAHR Coat: METALAST STAHR Coat is a water based ceramic coating used on wood or wood based material, especially in enclosed areas such as rafters, attic walls and basement beams where an architectural coating is not required. This fire prevention product has been extensively tested and UL certified to meet a “Class A” fire rating with a flame spread of 0 and a very low smoke density rating of 5. The coating itself is fire resistant and intumesces slightly by forming small ceramic insulative bubbles when exposed to flames. It has been tested for mold inhibition according to ASTM D-3273-82. Tests show the highest possible rating of 10 -, which indicates the absence of mold growth.
- METALAST STAHR Coat SS: METALAST STAHR Coat SS is a water based two part ceramic coating that is mixed at the job site and spray applied to structural steel. The fire retardant, no VOC product is designed to be applied in one heavy coat to steel without sag. The product falls between the low-priced cementitious coatings and the more expensive intumescent coatings in cost performance. The amount of coating (thickness) determines the amount of unsulative protection the steel receives, to give various hourly fire ratings. METALAST STAHR Coat SS may also be applied to OSB or drywall to achieve fire barrier certifications.
- METALAST STAHR Particles LT: The product consists of ceramic powders available in various particle sizes down to 10 microns. The particles fire retards by expanding and giving off of hydration at temperatures between 100° and 140° C. METALAST STAHR Particles LT works well in polyurethane and epoxy systems both for fire retarding and smoke reduction.
- METALAST STAHR Particles HT: METALAST STAHR Particles HT are fire retardant ceramic particles that give off water of hydration at temperatures that exceed 250 C and therefore can be used in injection molding. The product is reduced in size to 10 microns or less and is applicable for injection molding of polypropylene and TPO plastics.
- METALAST INTUMESC 1: METALAST INTUMESC - 1 is an intumescent fire retardant powder that is designed to be added to various latex systems to make intumescent flame retardant coatings or to be added directly to polyurethane, epoxies, or injection molded plastics where the temperatures don’t exceed 200 C.
- METALAST INTUMESC 2: METALAST INTUMESC - 2 is an intumescent powder particle size average of 12 microns designed for application in injection molding of polyolefins and TPO where temperatures exceed 230° C.
